No sense hiding it

Posted in Garbage at 11:46 am by Nova Newcomer

Okay, for all of you who don’t know this about me…I have a serious celebrity news problem. I know, I know. Garbage in, garbage out. But garbage is so dang addictive! So, today, my confession is that I am excited to see the new JT video. I will give myself 6 Hail Marys and 4 Our Fathers for that one.

Take the scenic route

Posted in Personal, Travel at 5:05 pm by Nova Newcomer

My husband and I got the heck out of Dodge this weekend, since global warming has apparently turned Portland, OR into Phoenix, AZ. Movie theaters and shopping malls must be thrilled!

Anyway, his parents own property in Washington near Mt. Adams. Just about 90 minutes from Portland and across a toll bridge, it’s a nice quiet area to escape from the city. On our way back today, we decided not to take I-5 and instead take the windy roads through the small riverside towns that line the Columbia on the Washington side. Listening to Johnny Cash’s greatest hits, wearing our baseball caps and driving 50 mph on state route 14 — it felt like we were part of our very own American renaissance.

So, next time you aren’t pressed for time, take the scenic route.

Why I love my husband

Posted in Personal at 6:54 pm by Nova Newcomer

There are many, many reasons. But how many women can say that their husband came home from work with an excited lilt in his voice saying, “I have something to show you.” And that thing he shows you is a tour of the places you went to on your honeymoon on Google Earth. That’s love.

And he also happens to make the best shredded chicken burritos this side of the Mississippi.

77th All Star Game

Posted in Sports at 6:26 pm by Nova Newcomer

I just found out that this year’s All Star Game is number 77. All the more reason to celebrate tonight’s festivities. 77 is a good number. My dad always says it’s because the TrailBlazers won the championship that year, I was born and Elvis died. In that order. And I think he’s fairly serious about the Elvis part, but maybe that’s just his macabre sense of humor. Damn it! I love any chance to use a word like macabre. So, here’s to 77. In honor of the 77th All Star Game, here are my top 7 reasons to watch this year’s All Star Game:

  1. The star in centerfield.
  2. Ichiro Suzuki was the leadoff batter.
  3. Ozzie Guillen managing the AL…so complex, but likeable at the same time.
  4. It’s sweet that these guys can put rivalries aside mid-season to play ball!
  5. Making fun of that awful Chevy commercial they keep playing…this ain’t the Super Bowl, folks. 😦
  6. Mariner Housewife live blog.
  7. It’s freaking baseball, dudes!

Live Bloggin’ All Star Tuesday

Posted in Sports at 5:03 pm by Nova Newcomer

My good friend Moira writes a blog that is featured in the Seattle P-I. She is live blogging from the All Star Game. For those of you whose life ends after the Super Bowl, baseball takes a break in July for three days to revel in All Star mania. Anyway, I get to be her research assistant. So, keep checking Mariner Housewife tonight for updates!
